Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern for Scroll Saw Woodworking

The Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern is designed around individual pieces of contrasting hardwood. Light maple or basswood can create the cream fur and lighter moon areas, while cherry and alder provide warm golden tones. Medium walnut or mahogany works for shadow fur, with dark walnut adding deeper contrast.

Very dark walnut or ebony can be reserved for the nose and open mouth, helping these important facial features remain clearly defined.

Most pieces in the master project can be made from approximately 3/4-inch stock. The moon may use 1/2 to 3/4-inch material, while the nose and front muzzle can begin with thicker stock when stronger relief is desired.

Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern Grain and Fur Direction

Grain direction is a major part of this Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern. For the layered wolf fur, the wood grain should generally travel from the root toward the point of each visual fur section. On the long muzzle, grain should flow toward the nose.

The moon works differently. Softer horizontal or gently curved grain helps it remain a calm background instead of competing visually with the wolf.

This approach allows the wood itself to suggest fur movement and makes the finished intarsia pattern look more natural.

Create Relief With the Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern

The Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern is designed as layered wall art rather than a completely flat wooden picture.

The moon forms the rear visual layer. The wolf’s lower body sits farther forward, followed by the face and bright front fur. The nose becomes the highest focal point.

Building depth gradually is important. A strongly raised nose combined with a completely flat body would look disconnected, so the guide uses controlled transitions from background to body, face and muzzle.

Resize the Howling Wolf and Moon Intarsia Pattern

The master version is 18 inches wide, but the pattern can be scaled for different spaces. The guide includes sizes from approximately 10 inches through 30 inches.

A 16-inch project uses about 88.9% scaling, the 18-inch version uses 100%, a 24-inch project uses 133.3%, and a 30-inch version uses approximately 166.7%.

Always scale the wolf, moon, muzzle, ear and all fur pieces by the same percentage. Changing only one part will distort the composition and create fitting problems.

Printable Howling Wolf & Moon Intarsia Pattern

The Howling Wolf & Moon Intarsia Pattern includes nine printable reference tiles arranged as a 3 × 3 master layout. For the 18-inch master, the pages should be printed at 100% / Actual Size rather than Fit to Page.

After printing, trim the registration marks, arrange the tiles in order and tape the seams from the back before transferring the pattern to wood.
